Uinta Mountains Adventures

Lofty Lake Loop – 4 miles

The Lofty Lake Loop is one of the most scenic short hikes in the Uinta Mountains, located about 30 miles north of Duchesne. This 4-mile alpine circuit passes by multiple lakes, including Kamas, Scout, and Lofty Lake, while offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. With moderate elevation gain, it’s a great half-day option for hikers looking for big scenery without a long trek.

Grandaddy Lake via Hades Pass – 7 miles round-trip (moderate)

Grandaddy Lake is the largest natural mountain lake in the Uintas, and it’s reached by a 7-mile round-trip hike over Hades Pass. Starting from the Grandview Trailhead, the trail climbs steadily before dropping into a basin of sparkling alpine water. The route is moderately challenging but manageable in a single day, making it a classic hike for both locals and visitors.

Grandaddy Basin Loop – 16 miles (intermediate)

For those looking to extend their time in the backcountry, the Grandaddy Basin Loop offers a 16-mile journey connecting several high-altitude lakes. This trail is often done as an overnight backpacking trip, with plenty of opportunities for fishing and camping along the way. The distance and terrain make it more challenging, but the variety of lakes and alpine views make the effort worthwhile.

Uinta Highline Trail (sections) – up to 100 miles (challenging)

The Uinta Highline Trail is a legendary 100-mile route stretching across the crest of the Uinta Mountains. While some attempt the full trail over multiple weeks, many hikers choose shorter sections to experience its alpine passes, lakes, and wide open ridgelines. This is a strenuous backcountry hike requiring preparation, but even a segment offers an unforgettable wilderness experience north of Duchesne.
